Sam and Frodo’s quest into Mordor was like the most hellish combat assignment one can imagine. Absent context, you might assume there was gay subtext, but he is very straight. He speaks of how much he loved him and wears a bracelet of his in remembrance. I know a guy who lost one of his closest friends fighting together in Afghanistan. The bond of comrades in arms is truly unique. Just my opinion of course, but I think Tolkien’s understanding of the depth and power of platonic relationships was likely greatly informed by his experiences in WWI. That is how I view Sam’s devotion to Frodo and Frodo’s reciprocal affection and honoring of that bond. There are other Tolkien-themed subreddits out there!
